Listen In
I will not rehash the story, shared within this episode, in this post of the incredible transition that occurred in my life due to an encounter and experience. You just need to listen in to hear it. It involved our guest, Janet McMahan, an accomplished artist, creator and friend and a well known public figure, Zig Ziglar. You need to listen to her wisdom, as it applies to all of us. For men and women alike, she gives us wisdom for our life journey.
Life Transitions
Life truly does have seasons. We go from one thing to another and experience so many things, some really tough and some extraordinary. Janet exhibits the persistence that can help us 'create' extraordinary moments. Listen to her story about how she stalked (in a good way) Zig Ziglar. The effort paid off as she joined forces with him to create something incredible. That creation impacted me and has me writing this blog today. Had she not done what she did, I would not be sharing this with you forty, yes it has been forty years, later.
You and I will face transitions in life. As a small business owner, we owe it to ourselves and our team to be prepared. Are you prepared? Do you have your business capable to run without you in the event an unplanned life event happens? You must work on getting prepared before the extraordinary or the storm happens. You may be thinking, 'why do I prepare for the extraordinary? That's good isn't it?' Yes it is, however it takes energy and resources to take advantage of another opportunity, just as it does to survive a storm. Get prepared!
Self Care
The best way to prevent storms and to also prepare for storms is through focusing on you. I know this seems selfish, but it is absolutely not selfish, if done the right way. Exercise, rest time, good sleep, brain relaxation and eating healthy are just a few ways to prepare. I like what Janet said in our conversation about self care. She said to find some that "...bathes me in happy dust." I love that!
You owe it to your family, your employees, your colleagues and to God to be all that you were meant to be. That means you have to start by focusing on self care. Destroying your mind, body and soul by focusing so hard on your business, or anything for that matter, is one of the most selfish acts. You are depriving the world from the best you. Find a way today to start working on you. The world needs YOU.
The Impact
The impact Janet and Zig had on me, while seemingly small and incidental, has accompanied me throughout my life. For forty years, Zig's book See You At the Top and the play by the same name, along with the songs that Janet created, has had a lasting impact on me. Would I even be in the business of coaching and educating had I not been put on a path of personal development all those years ago? While I don't know that answer, I do know that I am blessed to have had that experience as it was formative.
You can make an impact in this world just the same, by being the best you. As you go through the transitions of life and focus on self care, the best you will emerge. Know that your purpose in this world is wrapped in your strengths and skills that are God given. Use those by serving others and you may very well impact someone just like Janet and Zig did with me so many years ago.
Enjoy the Journey!
